Italians are back to work after their month long holiday
known as “Ferragosto”. Businesses close for the days around
August 15. “Why?” you ask. Well it is perfect timing
to celebrate the middle of the summer and the end of the
hard work in the fields. Actually, Ferragosto goes back to
pagan times as Feriae Augusti declared by Roman
Emperor Augustus. He dedicated festivals and celebrations to
Diana, the goddess of the woods, the phases of the Moon and
Maternity during which all Romans made offerings to the
goddess in hope that their labor would be safe and happy.
Later the feast celebrated Vortumnus, the god of the seasons
and ripening of the crops. Today the Feriae
like many other pagan holidays come to us in the form of a
religious feast. In modern times, we celebrate the day when
the Blessed Virgin Mary was assumed into heaven. In Italy, the celebration goes on for the
entire month which equates to vacation and leisure time in Italy. Is this the Dolce Vita?

Casanuova di Ama Olive
Oil
2007
|
Many of you have queried
when the new olive oil will arrive from Chianti. The
gathering of olives takes place from October to November. In
the past, once Casanuova di Ama gathered their
olives, I received notice it was time to place the order. It
became a rush to gather the pre-order requests, place the
order and receive shipment for Christmas. This year,
we will try something new. We will take pre-orders from
September 1 until November 5. You will have time to
contact friends, family and neighbors who might wish to
purchase the liquid gold. Anyone purchasing 20 bottles will
receive one bottle free. This year, too, we are offering the
larger sized containers at a big cost savings. Why
not take advantage of the extra size and use this product
for many more recipes. Avoid running out mid-year. Toast
your health with this pure and unadulterated oil.
Although the Euro is not
stable, I will indicate the approximate costs for the
various sizes:
250 ml (gift-size decorator bottle) $27
500 ml (1/2 liter) $37
1000 ml (1 liter)$52 3-Liter Tin $115
(savings of $46 compared to 3x 1000ml)
5-Liter Tin $145
(savings of $115 compared to 5x 1000ml)
These prices reflect
shipping from Italy and pick up in Bend, OR.
For shipping and handling
within USA, there are additional UPS costs.
